Surgical errors are one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in the United States today.  Errors can involve accidentally cutting the wrong tissue during the procedure, postoperative infection, not taking into account previous medical history, leaving surgical implements inside the patient, or damage to surrounding organs or nerves.  Doctor errors also occur when inexperienced or negligent surgeons fail to anticipate complications and adjust their procedures accordingly.

Surgical Errors

Common types of surgical mistakes include:

  • Operating on the wrong area of the body
  • Too much or too little anesthesia
  • Leaving surgical implements inside the body
  • Incorrect procedures
  • Unnecessary surgery
  • False or failure to provide patient recommendations for surgery prepartion

Many times a surgical mistake goes unnoticed by the patient until it is too late.  In some cases, surgeons may also attempt to hide or minimize any mistakes they make throughout their relationship with the patient.  Not only is this unethical, but it can cause the patient to suffer serious long-term consequences.

Liability for Mistakes in Surgery Operations

Determining liability in any medical malpractice case that involves doctor errors, hospital errors or surgical mistakes may be difficult to prove.  Legal professionals will be able to examine the patient records, interview witnesses and meet with medical experts to determine who is at fault.  If more than one party is negligent, a lawsuit can be brought against all of those to help you obtain as much compensation as possible.

Lawyers can Help with Surgery Malpractice

If you were the victim of a doctor error, hospital error or surgical mistake, you should consult with an accident attorney immediately.  You have the legal right to pursue a settlement based upon your situation.  It is critical that you act quickly; as the law limits the amount of time you have to seek compensation.
