DUI Saturation Patrol Proves Effective

The Long Beach Police Department’s Traffic Section conducted a DUI saturation patrol throughout Long Beach. The hours of operation were from 4 p.m. Saturday night, until 2 a.m. Sunday morning. During the ten-hour operation, ten additional police officers patrolled throughout the city searching for impaired drivers. During the operation one driver was arrested for driving under the influence, 119 drivers were issued traffic citations, and five cars were impounded.

DUI saturation patrols are a vital component in the fight against drunk drivers. Nationally, impaired driving caused by alcohol or drugs is the cause of one death every 30 minutes. Saturation patrols have proven to reduce impaired driving collisions by removing these drivers off our streets. The average American has a 30% chance of being killed or injured by an impaired driver.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
