Passenger Were Injured As Their Two Cars Collided

WINSTED- A Torrington woman, a Winchester police officer and a ride-along passenger were injured late Saturday night as their two cars collided at the entrance to Ledgebrook Plaza on New Hartford Road.

Christine Moo-ney, 23, of Torrington, was upgraded from critical to stable condition Sunday at Hartford Hospital, hospital officials said.

Police Officer Michael Roy and his unidentified passenger were treated for minor injuries and released from Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, according to police.

The two-car crash happened at 10:15 p.m., officials said, and the accident is being investigated by the Northwest Regional Accident Investig-ation Team.

"Being that it was their cruiser involved in the accident, (Winsted) asked us to be lead the investigation," Torrington Police Sgt. Linas Venclauskas said.

Roy was driving a 2000 Ford expedition owned by the Winchester Police Department.

Mooney was driving a tan 1992 Toyota Camry, police said.

"The preliminary investigation shows (Mooney) exited onto Route 44 while the cruiser was traveling eastbound," Lead Investigator Steven Pisarski said.

Pisarski said there was a caution light at the intersection. According to a police department press release, both cars sustained heavy damages.

The left driver?s side of Mooney?s vehicle was heavily damaged and windows broken, Pisarski said.

Initially LifeStar was called to the scene, but they were unable to respond due to bad weather, Venclauskas said.

Pisarski said officials remained at the scene until 3 a.m. Both cars were impounded and secured at Winsted Police impound lot, Pisarski said.

"We don?t believe alcohol was a factor," he said.
