Cell Phone Car Crash

Have you been involved in cell phone car crash?  It is not hard to imagine how such an accident can happen.  Cell phones have become an indispensable part of life, for both business and personal reasons.  A recent Harvard study illustrates how, within five years, the number of cell phone subscribers rose from 94 to 128 million.

Because of their widespread popularity and use, it comes as no surprise that vast majorities of people drive and talk on their cell phones at the same time.  In fact, about 85% of all cell phone users engage in conversations while in their vehicle.  This alarming number, along with the added potential for distraction, has led three states California, New York, and New Jersey along with our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C, to ban handheld phone use completely while driving.  Other cell phone enforcement laws are in place throughout the country and legislation is still pending in some cases.

An estimated 6% of car accidents are directly related to the use of cell phones while driving each year.  Stricter laws and regulations need to be implemented to protect the public.  Although it may not seem like an alarmingly high percentage compared to other causes, it adds up to around 2,600 preventable deaths.

The importance of cell phones in today’s mobile, fast-paced world is undeniable.  In some conditions, you absolutely cannot deny the need to make or receive a call.

Here are a few suggestions to reduce the risk of accident and injury:

  • Opt for a hands-free devices such as an earpiece or phone cradle (a number of phones have Bluetooth technology nowadays)
  • Refrain from looking up or writing numbers while driving
  • Try to use your phone while your vehicle is static, or before you encounter heavy traffic
  • Use your phone only for necessary conversations; don’t make social calls while driving and keep your calls short
  • Abstain from using your phone when you find yourself in hectic situations, like heavy traffic and inclement weather

The propagation of cell phones does not seem to be slowing down.  Today’s technology allows for even more features, such as browsing the internet on your device, meaning that the distractions will likely increase.  Moreover, the more distracted a driver is the greater the chances he/she will be involved in an accident.  If you are involved in an accident with a careless driver while he/she was using a cell phone, it is imperative that you seek an experienced attorney who can assist you in case you have been injured as a result of the accident.
